Types of Volcanoes • Shield Volcano • Built from layers of runny lava from multiple quiet eruptions • Shallow, broad slope creating a flat, wide volcano • Example • Name: Mauna Kea • Location: Hawaii Types of Volcanoes Flipchart pg. 2
Effects of Volcanoes • Composite Volcano • Alternates between quiet and violent eruptions • Creates alternating layers of lava and ash debris (tephra) • Broad bases and steep sides (looks like regular mtn.) • Example • Name: Mt. St. Helens • Location: Washington, USA Types of Volcanoes Pg. 3
Types of Volcanoes • Cinder Cone Volcano • Made mostly of pyroclastic material from moderately explosive eruptions. • Steep slopes but small in size • Tephra, cinders, ash, pyroclastic rocks • Example • Name: Paricutín • Location: Mexico Types of Volcanoes Flipchart Pg. 4
