  1. Acids & Bases Chapter 19—Glencoe

  2. Observe demo • Be cognizant of the following vocabulary words.. • Acid • Base • Indicator • Phenolphthalein • Hydronium ion • Hydroxide ion • Neutralization • Precipitate

  3. Check out those words again! • This time, re-write your observations correctly using those vocabulary words to describe the “demo”. • You might start with definitions from the book, first. (hint, hint)

  4. characteristics Acids • Sour • Corrosive • Low pH • High pOH • Bitter • Caustic • Slippery feel on skin • High pH • Low pOH Bases

  5. History of the acid… • ….not THAT acid!..I mean the classification of certain molecules with certain properties! • Arrhenius—molecules that produce hydronium ions when in solution • Bronsted—molecules that release protons • Lewis—molecules that accept electrons in solution

  6. The opposite is true for bases! • Arrhenius—molecules that produce hydroxide ions in solution • Bronsted—molecules that accept protons • Lewis—molecules that donate electrons

  7. What?...how about examples! • HCl • Ba(OH)2 • NaOH • H2SO4 • NH3 • Hydrochloric acid • Barium hydroxide • Sodium hydroxide • Sulfuric acid • Ammonia—a base!!

  8. Strong vs. concentrated • 3 strong acids—memorize them • Hydrochloric acid • Sulfuric acid • Nitric acid • “Concentrated” simply refers to how much water has been added to dilute the solution! • WATCH OUT!..for strong & concentrated!
