Fitness Habits of Students • Those who are active as children tend to be active as adults • Nearly half of youths (ages 12-21) are not vigorously active on a regular basis • About 14% report NO physical activity or a sedentary life style • Most teens have poor eating habits. Why? • Therefore, teens’ blood pressure are higher today • The percentage of overweight teens have tripled since the late 1970’s
Fitness in America • The good news is that Americans are aware of how important fitness is • The bad news is that not enough Americans are doing something about it • Only 10% of adults are doing the recommended amount of daily activity • See leading causes of death chart on page 7 • 3 leading causes of death in the U.S. – Cancer, Heart Attack and Stroke • Leading cause of death for teenagers - Accidents
What Do They Mean? • Health – a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being that enables you to function at an optimal level in many areas of your life. • Wellness – is another way of describing the quality of your life. It suggests that not only your health is good but you function at a high level in other areas. The essential components of wellness are: intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social. • Physical Fitness – the ability to attain certain physical attributes. The state of physical well-being that allows you to: • Perform daily activities with vigor • Reduce the risk of health problems • Establish a fitness base for participation in a variety of activities
Two Types of Physical Fitness • Health – Related: • Cardiorespiratory – activities over a long period of time • Flexibility - maximum range of motion • Muscular Strength – force on a single contraction • Muscular Endurance – continued muscle movements • Body Composition – body fat% vs. lean body tissue • Skill – Related: • Coordination – integrating body movements • Agility – change direction • Reaction Time – time needed to start a movement • Power – combination of strength and speed • Speed – how fast from one point to another • Balance – body control
