8.5 Scientific Notation Algebra 1 Concepts and Skills McDougal Littell Linda Stamper
Scientific notation is a shorthand way of writing numbers that are very large or very small. Scientific notation has 3 parts. 1.25 12.5 .125 10 X a number greater than or equal to 1, but less than 10 multiplication symbol – do not use multiplication dot a power of 10 The exponent tells about the size of the number. A positive exponent indicates a number greater than or equal to 1. A negative exponent indicates a number between zero and 1.
Rules to Write in Standard Notation If the exponent is positive, move the decimal point as many places to the right as indicated by the exponent. positive exponent large number . 1.12 x 106 1.120000 1,120,000 If the exponent is negative, move the decimal point as many places to the left as indicated by the exponent. negative exponent small number .00043 . 0004.3 4.3 x 10-4
Example 1 Write in standard notation (decimal form). 3.0259 x 108 1. Write problem. 2. Write standard form. • Practice • 6.7 x 105 • 1.38 x 10-4 • 6.12 x 10-5 • 5.4 x 104 = 670,000 = .000138 = .0000612 = 54,000
Rules to Write in Scientific Notation Move the decimal point to create a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. Count the decimal positions to identify the exponent. If the original number is greater than or equal to 1, the exponent is positive. If the original number is between zero and 1, the exponent is negative. use a positive exponent original number is >1 3,250,000 3.25 x 106 • • use a negative exponent original number is between 0 and 1 0.000817 8.17 x 10-4 •
Example 2 Write in scientific notation. 42,000,000 1. Write problem. 2. Write scientific notation. • Practice • 0.000052 • 3,107,000 • 970,000,000 • 0.0063 = 5.2 x 10-5 = 3.107 x 106 = 9.7 x 108 = 6.3 x 10-3 What do you already know about the sign of the exponent?
