Roosevelt Enters Office: “First 100 Days” • FDR passes 15 major acts through Congress • These acts + his newly formed agencies “the New Deal”
“Alphabet Soup” • End unemployment and banks runs with the creation of agencies • Agencies were all backed by the federal government and supplied the people jobs once again
Restoring Confidence with America • FDR had to get the people to trust the government again • Advisors: some Progressives, some big businesses fighters, and some “New Freedom” supporters • “Fireside chats”, to help comfort the nation and support bank use
Alphabet Soup Agencies • CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps)-pg. 539 • TVA (Tenn. Valley Authority)-pg. 540 • AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Act)-pg. 540 • FERA (Federal Emergency Relief Agency)-pg.538 • FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation)-pg. 537-still around today • CWA (Civil Works Administration)-pg. 538 • SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission)-pg. 538-still around today
New Deal Loses Steam • After 2 years, the New Deal showed little improvement • Deficit spending used to pay for the programs • 1934—the American Liberty League formed to oppose New Deal • Party splits: Rep believe FDR has spent too much; Dems. believe FDR hasn’t gone far enough
Second New Deal • FDR feared his opponents would overcome his progress • New set of programs the Second New Deal • Millions more jobs • Construct many public projects: roads, buildings, parks, etc.
The “Sick Chicken Case” • 1935—Supreme Court struck down the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) • Schechter v. United States, accused of selling diseased chicken and violating the NIRA’s wage/hour code • Business was local Court ruled the NIRA could not regulate the business’ wages/hours • Court also decided that Congress could not delegate its powers to the Executive Branch • Now the S.C. could strike down all of FDR’s New Deal plans!!!
“Sick Chicken” (cont.) • FDR was furious • Called a group of Congressman • Come up with new legislation that would follow the Constitution AND allow the New Deal to succeed
Second New Deal • WPA (Works Progress Admin.) • REA (Rural Electrification Admin.) • SSA (Social Security Act)-still around today • NLRB (National Labor Relations Board)
Social Security • Set up the Social Security system • Old age payments • Unemployment insurance • Financial payment to people who could not support themselves (disabilities)
FDR’s Second Term • FDR wins 1936 election • Still very popular with the people and has made a lot of progress with the Depression • Made no “real” mistakes as President so far

“Bumps in the Road” • Attempts to “pack” the Supreme Court • Pass a bill to increase the number of justices on the S.C. and appoint them himself • Unpopular Attempt to interfere with the S.C.
The Roosevelt Recession • The economy looked like it could fully recover • THEN, late unemployment surge hit • Attempted to balance the budget • Left 2 million more out of work • John Keynes, economist, argued that FDR did everything wrong in ending the Depression
The New Deal Legacy • FDR took an active stance on ending the Depression • The New Deal led to a new example of government involvement with the economy • Created a “safety net” for average Americans • Another Depression government would “soften the blow”
