Cultural origins/ contributions The Sumerians were the first people who used the system and they lived in modern day Mesopotamia. This system was first used in 3100 B.C. The Babylonians invented the mathematics tablet and the 360 degree circle. The Babylonian system of mathematics was sexagesimal,or base 60 numeral system. From this we derive the modern day usage of 60 seconds in a minutes, 60 minutes in hour. The babylonians system is significant because that's how mathematics got started. They came up with how to count and how the symbols were used to identify each number.
(Base 60) The Number System Symbols used: Y, < Examples: 11) < Y 30) <<< 39) <<< YYY YYY YY <<< YYY << Y Y Hundreds Tens ones
Mathematics Operations 28 -16= 12 108+45=153 <<YY - < = <YY Y<<<YYY + <<<YYY YYY YY <<YYY <YY YYY = YY<<YYY 110*8= 880 Y YYY * YYY = < YYY<<< YY YYY Y< YY
