  2. Goal • Your ultimate goal is to win the belief rather than simply win the argument

  3. Ultimate Goal • Persuade readers that your argument is the most: • Logical • Moral • Practical

  4. Accomplish this by… • By explicitly stating and exploring your own assumptions and major reasons for adopting your position • By using various types of evidence including expert testimony, statistics, personal experiences, real life examples (from current affairs or history) • By using logical, ethical, and emotional appeals

  7. Topic • Your topic must be one that is complicated and for which there is no easy solution • If you cannot see the value of arguments on both sides of the issue, select another issue

  8. Content • You should develop each idea beyond simply saying it • You also need to consider what opponents to your thesis would say about your idea, what objections they would raise to it, and then you need to answer those objections

  9. Counter-Argument • Example: “You may feel as though what you are doing is just business. But really it isn’t, can’t you find a way to make money without killing the world?” • Directly address the counter argument. • However, It is not just business because....

  10. Tips for Persuasive Writing • Do not use contractions in ANY formal writing • Keep emotions out of it! Use the evidence provided... • Always refer back to argument • No run-on sentences

  11. Picking a topic • Five general topic areas: • World issues. • Environmental issues. • Political issues. • Personal issues. • Health issues

  12. Brainstorm • Write one paragraph explaining what you are going to write your speech on. • Be sure to have an explicit purpose/intent and underline it. • Include why it is a controversial or debatable topic. • Include the counterargument (what your opposition might say)
