  1. Deshler High School Diploma Information & Graduation Requirements For school year beginning 2009-2010 Presented by: Ms. Clark – Counselor for grades 9 & 10 Mrs. Belue – Counselor for grades 11 & 12

Deshler High School At Deshler Middle School… • Homeroom daily • 6 periods each day At Deshler High School… • No daily homeroom • Go to homeroom every 4 ½ weeks to receive progress reports/report cards • 7 periods each day • 3 lunch waves Deshler High School Handbook and Code of Conduct… • Bell schedule: • 7:45 – first bell • 8:00 – tardy bell • 3:00 – dismissal • Written excuses from parent or physician are turned in to the attendance office • 10 or more absences in a semester (excused or unexcused) may result in loss of credit

  3. Choosing Classes • Students should make course selections after discussing appropriate courses with parents, counselors, and teachers. • July 1st is the deadline for all schedule changes.

  4. Completing the Registration Form • Select 7 courses for the upcoming school year = 7 credits at the end of the school year upon making a 60 or higher • 4 core classes • 3 elective classes • Select 3 alternate courses • “CORE” class – English, Math, Science, Social Studies • “ELECTIVE” class – drama, band, P.E., art, chorus, Career Tech classes

  5. SAMPLE OF CLASSES FOR NEXT YEAR 1st period – Core (English) 2nd period – Elective (Computer) 3rd period – Elective (Art I) 4th period – Core (Science) 5th period – Core (Math) 6th period – Core (Soc. Studies) 7th period – Elective (Band)

  6. CREDITS • Each class is worth 1 credit. (except Health is ½ credit and Dr. Ed is ½ credit) • Timeline for credits: • You must earn 5 credits during the 9th grade year to be promoted to 10th grade • You must have a total of 12 credits at the end of your 10th grade year to be promoted to the 11th grade • You must have a total of 19 credits at the end of your 11th grade year to be promoted to the 12th grade

  7. Alabama High School Graduation Exam • Math • Reading • Language • Biology • Social Studies You must pass all 5 parts of the test in order to receive a high school diploma.

  8. Alabama High School Graduation Exam • The test is given 4 times a year (Sept., Dec. March, July) • There are certain assigned times to take the test. • So, when do I take it??? Math When you pass Algebra I – you will take the Math part of the test the next time it is given When you pass Algebra IA AND Algebra IB – you will take the Math part of the test the next time it is given

Alabama High School Graduation Exam Biology When you pass Biology I – you will take the Biology part of the test the next time it is given Social Studies The first opportunity to take this part of the test is March of the 10th grade year. Reading The first opportunity to take this part of the test is March of the 10th grade year.

  10. Alabama High School Graduation Exam Language The first opportunity to take this part of the test is March of the 10th grade year. Note: • Once you pass a part of the test, you do not take that part again. • If you do not pass a part in March of 10th grade, you can take the part again in March of the 11th grade. After that, the next opportunity will be July before the Senior year.

Requirements of the Standard Diploma • Four credits in Science (Biology I, Physical Science, and 2 other science classes) • Four credits in Social Studies (History 9, History 10, History 11,and Gov./Economics) (4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 CORE credits) • Electives to complete the 24 credit requirement (including requirements needed of all diplomas) • Passing all 5 parts of the AHSGE

Requirements of the Standard Diploma The Standard and Advanced diplomas require: • 1 credit in Physical Education (L.I.F.E.) • Required in grade 9 if you are not in Athletic P.E. or Band) • 1 fine arts credit (art, music, drama) • ½ credit in health • Dr. Ed. ½ credit is combined with health ½ credit in grade 10 • 9th grade students may take Health/Dr. Ed. if they will be 15 years of age or older on or before September 1st of the 9th grade school year • 1 credit in computer education if you took Business Technology in 8th grade • If you did not take Business Technology in 8th grade, you must take Business Technology in grade 9 plus another computer class before graduation • 1 online course / experience** New for 2009-2010 freshmen **

  15. Requirements for the Advanced Diploma • Four credits in English (College Prep English 9, College Prep English 10, College Prep English 11, College Prep English 12 or AP English 12) • Four credits in Mathematics Algebra I Geometry Algebra II with Trigonometry Algebra III or Pre-Calculus

Requirements for the Advanced Diploma • Four credits in Science (Biology I, Chemistry, and 2 other Sciences from: Physics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, or Forensic Science) • Four credits in Social Studies (College Prep World History, College Prep Early U.S. History, College Prep Modern U.S. History, Government/Economics) (4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 CORE credits)

  17. Requirements for the Advanced Diploma • Electives to complete the 26 credit requirement(including requirements needed of all diplomas – see next slide) • Passing all 5 parts of the AHSGE

Requirements for the Alabama Occupational Diploma • Four credits in English (Employment English I, Employment English II, Employment English III, Employment English IV) • Four credits in Mathematics (Essential Skills Math I, Essential Skills Math II, Algebraic Explorations I, Algebraic Explorations II) • Four credits in Science (Life Skills Science II, Life Skills Science I, Life Skills III, Science Connections IV) • Four credits in Social Studies (World History for Living, U.S. History for Living I, U.S. History for Living II, Government/Economics for Living) • 1 credit in Fine Arts (music, art, drama) • 1 credit in P.E. • ½ credit in Health • 2 credits in Career/Technical Education • 1 credit in Marketing Principles (required before CO-OP course) • 1 credit in Cooperative Education Seminar course (270 work hours) • Electives to complete 24credits • Must participate in the Alabama High School Graduation Examination

National Honor Society • Students need to have good leadership, character, and need to be involved in the school and community. • Passed all parts of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam • 87.5 cumulative grade average (begins in grade 9) • Eligibility is determined in the 11th grade • Completion of NHS application turned in by announced deadline to NHS sponsor • Students have the responsibility to plan curriculum to meet these requirements. • Two College Prep Math courses, One College Prep Science course, and One College Prep Electivecourse Red Book Page 2

Senior Honor Students(determined for graduation ceremony) To be an HONOR STUDENT at graduation from Deshler High School a student must: • Earn an Advanced Diploma • Pass all 5 parts of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam • Have a cumulative grade point average which ranks the student as one of the top ten academic students in the senior class on a scale of 0-100 points. These will be the students with the ten highest grade averages. Red Book Page 2

  23. DUAL CREDIT/DUAL ENROLLMENT • Available with local colleges to students who have COMPLETED grade 10 and have a “B” average or above • 1 college course = ½ credit at high school level Red Book Page 3

Valedictorian/Salutatorian • The honor student with the highest grade average is the valedictorian. • The honor student with the second highest grade average is the salutatorian. • They will be determined after the first nine weeks grades of the second term of the senior year. • Two year residency required. ACCESS Distance Learning Program • An education initiative of the Alabama Department of Education • Provides opportunities and options for Alabama public high school students to engage in Advanced Placement (AP) courses and other electives to which they may not otherwise have access • All courses are offered during the regular school day by Internet connections linking classrooms, educators, and students across the state Red Book Page 3
