Senior Boards Presentation 2010 By Jacob Lopez
High School Highlights • Culinary trip to Italy last summer-Food tour of Italy with a group of students. • Key Club-Worked with the club on the Food Drive, Blood Drive, and Relay for Life. • Wrestling-2008-2010-Made it to the State Finals in 2009.
Career Goals • I want to be a Chef and an Entrepreneur, eventually owning my own restaurant. • My Grandfather and Father both have owned their own restaurants. • I would like to open my own Gourmet Italian restaurant called “Ciao Bella.”
College Plans • South Seattle Community College Culinary Arts program. • Hope to also work part-time for a catering company while attending South Seattle. • Transfer to the Art Institute of Seattle to complete my Bachelor of Arts in Culinary Arts.
Volunteer Service • I volunteered to make lunches for the Lakewood Police Officers Memorial at the Tacoma Dome. We prepared lunches for over 1,000 people for 8 hours. • I also made snacks for students and parents attending Open House and Future Vikings Night. I worked with Chef’s Club for a total of 6 hours. • I supported Key Club’s Food Drive and Blood Drive events at the school and on Saturdays for a total of 6 hours.
Challenges • Discovered some of the challenges when baking large numbers of cookies for a deadline. • Developed problem solving skills when working with organizations that need to meet specific requirements for food drives. • Learned how to improve my communication skills when working as a team.
Successes • It was an honor to serve food to grieving members of the Lakewood Police Department. • Fed over 500 students and parents at various events for Chef’s Club. • Helped feed 800 families Thanksgiving Dinner while being a part of the Food Drive.
Resume • Will be gaining experience in the restaurants at South Seattle Community College. • Hope to gain a position at Mio Posto Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant in South Seattle. • This will help prepare me to reach my goal to become a Chef and Restaurant Owner.
Informational Interview • I interviewed Natalie Moretti, Head Chef, Sartini’s Ristorante in Seattle. • Natalie has a Bachelor of Arts in Culinary Arts from the Cordon Bleu Institute. • I interviewed Natalie because she has a degree in Culinary Arts and extensive experience in Italian cooking.
Transcript Review • I have a 3.0 GPA. • I have consistently earned high grades in all of my Arts classes. • I struggle with Math. I am trying to improve my Math skills because as a restaurant owner I know I will need to manage my money well. • I believe if I can improve in Math, I will be a successful Chef because I understand what it takes to be a success.
College Choice • I chose to attend South Seattle Community College because they have 3 training restaurants for me to learn in so that I can gain experiences in all types of restaurants. • I want to attend the Art Institute when I can transfer because they focus on the art of cooking and I will be close to a wider variety of restaurants in the Seattle area. • I hope this combination will help me be the most well rounded Chef I can be.
Best Works Reflection • The three traits that I feel I have developed the most over my high school career are: Creativity, Knowledge, and Effects of Effort. • As a student chef, I have learned how to make food look more attractive to a customer and how to improvise when things go wrong. • I have gained knowledge about the business world and how to work with others in a high pressure situation.
Conclusion • I think the most significant experience I had in High School was my trip to Italy last summer. • I was able to experience a new culture. I realized that there is so much more for me to learn. • I am looking forward to developing my skills in Culinary Arts.
