South Camden Community School • Located in Somerstown, Kings Cross – high levels of socio-economic deprivation. Majority of students entitled to Free School Meals • 800+ students, comprehensive secondary school • 94% of students speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). Over 50 different languages are spoken by students • 1 in 4 students are refugees • 95% of students are Muslim
Why? • In 2008 the use of the word ‘gay’ as a derogatory term was increasing • Students interviewed in PSHEE & Citizenship expressed homophobic views • A number of LGBT staff had joined the school and felt it was important to lead a piece of work on challenging homophobia and celebrating diversity
The Beginnings • Whole school assembly on challenging homophobia • Group of students worked with a facilitator to look at the issue and develop an action plan
The Respect Agenda • Interested staff asked to join working party • Suggestions made for celebrating diversity and challenging homophobia • Improved use of inclusive resources/curriculum • Student led INSET for staff (scripts devised and provided) • School Values • Whole school and tutor time • assemblies
Respect Week • A whole school focus week dedicated to challenging prejudice and discrimination

Measuring Success • Less use of the word ‘gay’ as a derogatory slang term • Massive reduction in use of homophobic language and homophobic bullying of staff and students • Students and staff beginning to come out • The work commended in Ofsted inspection
Where next for SCCS? • Raise the profile of the work • Roll out programme of student training • Continue and improve Respect Week and LGBT History Month • Ensure the work is part of the School Improvement Plan • Improve monitoring of homophobic incidents • Extend work to include parents and primary schools

New initiatives - Census • Needed schools buy in • Some schools were wary • Other media – Newspapers and Radio • Ultimately the census was very well received • Relationship with BBC Radio Lincolnshire • Helped with a couple of other pieces • Signposted to other colleagues • They were keen to get involved with a Stonewall piece

Working with the Media • Top tips • Be clear what you want to say • Give lots of info / data if possible • Give the reporter what they need to make the story work • Practice a lot before you’re on air especially for live pieces • Be helpful and offer help for further reports!

Day 2 Intensive workshop on use of equipment, interviewing technique and editing material resulted in the development of audio clips being developed to be aired on Siren radio
Day 3 Intensive workshop on use of equipment, interviewing technique and editing material resulted in the production of video recordings
Day 4 Intensive workshop with a Graphics specialist reviewing initial ideas produced on Day 1 and developing the ideas using Graphics.
Day 5 Presentation of the outcomes to the Lincolnshire Anti-Bullying working group Very positive feedback from the school
