Sustainable Development of Coastal Zones Current Situation in Russia The Russian Federation has the longest coastline in the world: 60 000 km Legislation does not define the coastal zone as an integral object of management, the ecosystem as a whole is likely to be damaged by its many users Global sea level rise and coastal erosion results in the loss of valuable coastal land and the infrastructure associated with it. 41% of Russia’s coastline suffers from erosion. Intensification of anthropogenic impact on coastal areas (oil and gas industry, recreation) and enhancement of economical damage from natural and man-induced hazards Absence of special environmental education in classical universities
New MSc Programs Moscow State University (since 2007): • Oceanography of Shelf Zones • Sustainable Development of Coastal Zone
Sustainable Development of Coastal Zones Basic courses : Coastal Geomorphology Estuarine Processes Dynamics of Shelf Waters Modern Socio-economical Processes in Coastal Zone
Oceanography of Shelf Zones Basic courses : Dynamics of Shelf Waters Ecology of Shelf Waters Remote Sensing of Shelf Waters Biogeochemistry of Barrier Zones
SPECIFIC STATUS – PERSONAL EDUCATIONAL STANDARD FOR MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY (2011) 4 years Bachelor in Hydrometeorology Integrated Specialist- Master degree, Batchelors – only the worst 20% 6 years Fundamental Oceanology Master 2 years
