  2. Origin起 源 • 元 萧 节 is held on the 15th day of first the month in the lunar calendar! • The Lantern festival dates back the Ming Di of the Han dynasty. • An effort to promote the learning of Buddhist doctrines. • The lighting of lanterns as a symbolic means of paying homage to Buddha.

  3. Customs and Traditions习 俗 What to Do What Not to Do • Burn “Hell” money, so it becomes accessible to the ancestors • Make offerings of food, drinks, and articles of the dead. • Paper boats are released in rivers so it can guide the spirits • Talk to your ancestors on this day, they can hear you. • Do not go swimming, it leaves you vulnerable to ghostly interpretation. • Go out after dark, troubled spirits are out this time of the day. • Move your house at this time, your ancestors will no longer be able to find their home. • Open a business; it’s bad luck and sense. • Have a wedding.

  4. Modern day Evolution现 代 演 变 • Today on the streets, there are fireworks, walking on stilts, and folk dancing. • Lanterns are displayed and in some places riddles are hung and prizes are awarded. • A traditional food that the Chinese eat are 元 宵(yuanxiao) sweet dumplings.

  5. Story Time古事 • Once upon a time, there was a bird that was originally from heaven. The village people tried to hunt it which made the emperor very angry. He ordered to demolish the village and kill everything with storm of fire on the 15th day of the lunar calendar. Luckily a wise man came by the village and told everyone to hang red lanterns and explode firecrackers in the streets. So that the emperor would think the people were under attack. On that night the emperor did not burn down the village because he thought that the village was already destroyed. Now every year people carry lanterns on the street and play with firecrackers.
