Use of “de” to show possession: El uso de “de”: • de = of, to whom it belongs • de = ‘s in English and it replaces the apostrophe ‘s because it doesn’t exist in Spanish • To express possession with de: (de + person(s)) Ex: los libros de Susana = Susan’s books Ex: la casa de Eduardo y Enrique = Eduardo & Enrique’s house Ex: la clase favorita de Ana = Ana’s favorite class
De with articles: de + la = los papeles de la chica de + los / las = los libros de los chicos • *Contractions: De combines with el to form the contraction del (if used before a masculine noun) Ex: la clase del profesor (de + el profesor = del profesor) Ex: ¿Quién es el director del colegio? Sr. Trummer es el director del colegio.

To state to whom something belongs use SER with “de”: Ex: es with 1 object = it belongs to….. (Es el libro del profesor) Ex: son with 2 objects = they belong to…. (Son las carpetas de Marcos y Ana) • Questions asking possession: Ex: ¿De quién es la pluma? La pluma es de Miguel Ex: ¿De quién son los libros? Son los libros de Marta y Miguel.
