Family Worship • Family worship is time you spend glorifying God when you are together with your • Immediate family Those relatives you are closest with & interact most • Extended family Those relatives that aren’t your immediate family • God’s family Your extended family united through Christ • Goals of family worship • Connecting your family to God • Strengthening your personal relationship with God
Worship with immediate family • Worshipping with your immediate family is more than just • Going to church on Sunday • Saying a prayer before dinner & bedtime • Outside of corporate worship, worshipping with family can include • Instruction, teaching, and role-modeling • Taking care of family through service & sacrifice • Praising God together by singing or praying • Worshipping together will strengthen your family!
Instruction, teaching, and role-modeling … He commanded our ancestors to teach [His laws] to their children, so the next generation might know them, even the children not yet born, and they in turn will teach their own children. Psalms 78:7-5 I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. 2 Timothy 1:5
Caring through service & sacrifice … you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Titus 2:7 But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers . 1 Timothy 5:8
Praising God by singing or praying Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. Colossians 3:16 For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them. Matthew 18:20
Worship with extended family • Whether your extended family members are Christians or not, you still have the chance to worship with them! • Together in Christ, with family members who are Christians • Attending worship together; serving together; praying together; celebrating life together • Our living example allows non-believing extended family experience the love of Christ • Seeing Christ in us may drive a slow-building, indirect appreciation for God – even in a non-believer
Extended family worship by example When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.. Romans 12:13-18
What have been your experiences or challenges when reaching out to extended family members?
Worship with God’s family • We have two different opportunities to worship with God’s family • Corporate worship: Sunday morning, m-groups, etc. • Daily fellowship: Being together & sharing in all things • As members of God’s family, we should be devoted to continuous fellowship • Christians should be together, enjoying each other, and sharing in all things (unity) • We should be sharing our lives; our homes & our meals; our gifts, talents, & time; our joys & sorrows (our lives!)
Worshipping with God’s family All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. ... And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had …They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homesfor the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people… Acts 42:47
