To create categories from this collection of shapes below qualities need to be identified that would include at least two of the shapes and exclude any remaining shapes. • While stars, bolts and clouds are all shapes because they have a perimeter, a cloud is not a pointy shape because it lacks jagged edges. What category could only two of these objects fit into, while the third one didn’t fit?
Why we look for more specific categories…? • When you look for something that parts of a group have in common, you are going Below the Surface. You are doing more advanced thinking. • This makes your thinking, your argument and your writing better!
This is a process… • Today, you are learning a process for identifying categories and what goes in them. • There is more to this process that you will learn later to make your writing even more advanced. • This is the first step.
Organization Practice: Get an envelope with colored shapes in it…. Make a group of 4 with your pod. Together decide the following: Which of these shapes belong together? Put these shapes in groups according to how they are similar. You decide what the shapes in each group have in common. For each group, explain what the shapes have in common.
