Why it Happened • Aaron Burr was a republican and Alexander Hamilton was a Federalist • Hamilton and Burr had developed a rivalry against each other through out several years • Alexander Hamilton was critical of Burr’s character and his attitude • Aaron Burr wrote a piece criticizing John Adams, which angered Hamilton
The Election of 1800 • Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr were tied at 73 votes and it was up to the House of Representatives • During this time, Alexander Hamilton said that Burr was extremely dangerous • The House of representatives were influenced by this and voted for Jefferson • As a result, Aaron Burr became vice president
The Duel and Outcome • The duel happened on July 11, 1804 at The Heights of Weehawken in New Jersey. • Aaron Burr won the duel and shot Alexander Hamilton • Hamilton died the next day
The Effects • The Federalists lost their smart and well-respected leader • An anti-dueling law was passed to ban the act of dueling New York • This law was later applied to all states
