Boson -A subatomic particle, that has zero or integral spin -Force carrier -Has even mass
Background Info • Initially theorized in 1964 • Tentatively confirmed to exist March 14, 2013 • Named after Peter Higgs, one of six physicists who, in 1964, proposed the mechanism that suggested existence
The “God Particle” • Said to be what caused the “Big Bang” -Trigger that set off the fuse of the Big Bang • Gave rise to all living things **Flame demo • Flame: Early universe- too hot to for anything (protons, electrons, atoms) to exist • Smoke: Expanding and cooling to what earth is like today. We are the smoke.
Photon • Quantum electrodynamics • Elementary particle • Force carrier for the electromagnetic force • Easily observable at both microscopic and macroscopic levels • Has no rest mass so it travels at the speed of light when in a vacuum • Gradually developed by Albert Einstein to explain experimental observations that did not fit the classical wave model of light.
Gluons • Exchange particles for the strong force the strong force holds protons, neutrons, and quarks together • Carries a color charge that affects quarks • 8 different gluons • Confinement • Colored particles always appear with white particles
W Boson • The W Boson is one of five particles that transmit the fundamental forces of nature. • The W boson comes I positively and negatively charged varieties. • They collaborate with the electrically neutral Z boson, to cause a force known as the weak interaction. • The W boson is HUGE! Which means its effects are very short range and very weak at everyday energies. • The W boson can change the nature of an interacting particle. It can turn an down quark into an up quark.
Z boson • The Z boson is a heavy particle that is one of the carriers of the weak force. • The Z boson was first discovered as an intermediary of a new type neutrino reaction. This was the missing piece of the puzzle in which the forces created by the W bosons fit together with the force of electromagnetism, due to the photon.
