Opener Give me instructions to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Use imperatives, or commands, if you can.
Procedures and Materials Let’s use what we’re learning
Imperatives ex: Shut the door. • Commands • Have an implied subject, namely you • No “I”, “Johnny”, etc…. • Directs the listener to do something
Imperative? Do each if an imperative.... • Touch your nose with one finger. • Simon should stand up. • You may want to rest. • Pretty please with a cherry on top clap once.
Precise and Concise • Precise: exact, correct, detailed • Concise: no unnecessary words
Precise and Concise? • Touch your nose with one finger. • Which finger? How much force? –not very precise • Simon should stand up. • You may want to rest. • Pretty please with a cherry on top clap once. • Precise but not concise.....clap once....
Lab Goal • Use aluminum nitrate and sodium phosphate to create 1 grams of aluminum phosphate. This reaction will take place in water. • Determine how much of each reactant you will need andhow much product you have at the end (did you really get 1 gram?)
How much of each reactant? Goal = 1 gram of aluminum phosphate. • Remember: the 2 reactants (liquids) have a double replacement reaction to produce a precipitate (aluminum phospate) in water. • Write a balanced equation for this to determine how much of the reactants you need (stoichiometry)....hint: water is not part of the reaction • Al(NO3)3*9H2O + Na3PO4*12H2O H2O + __ + __
Materials and Procedures Directions • Use bulleted list for materials • How many grams of each reactant do you need? • How much water will you add to each reactant? • How are you going to measure the amount of aluminum phosphate you made? • Use imperatives for procedure. Balance precision with concision. • Write the procedure as though you are writing to a peer who has not taken chemistry. (not a 5 year old...think of your audience...
Day 2 Data Collection
Goal = Collect 1 gram of aluminum phosphate.
Procedure • Step-by-step details on how to do the lab! • How much of reactants?…measure how?..in what containers?....mix how? • Add water?....how much? • Separate product?....how?
Materials Al(NO3)3*9H2O H2O Na3PO4*12H2O Glassware …specify which pieces you are using
Samples of data to collect: Initial mass of each reactant (grams) Final mass of each reactant (grams) Final mass of product (grams) *Percent yield of Aluminum Phosphate (calculate) Temperature, initial (Celsius) Temperature, final (Celsius) Color of reactants..color of products..(observations) Create a data table for your data…..
Today: • Turn in procedure and materials list • Create a data table…label items you can measure, items you calculate, items you observe. • Write a purpose for this lab (in a complete sentences….) • Data table and purpose due tomorrow
Day 3 Finalize a procedure
