Ethics • Ethics – determining what is right or wrong action in a reasoned, impartial manner • Business ethics – the ethical principles used in making business decisions • Fundamental ethical rules – ethical decisions that evaluate only the act and not its consequences • Consequence-based reasoning – ethics that evaluate the results of an action

  3. Unit 2 Vocabulary

  4. Morals and Integrity • Integrity – doing what is right even under pressure to act otherwise • Moral rights – legitimate claims on other people, which flow from each person’s status as a human being

  5. Civil Rights • Civil disobedience – open, peaceful conduct in violation of an alleged unjust law • Civil rights – personal, human rights recognized and guaranteed by our Constitution

  6. Judicial Decisions • The Good – standard for judging right and wrong • Impartiality – making decisions that treat everyone the same

  7. Additional Vocabulary •  Majority rule – elected representatives vote for laws acceptable to the majority of people they represent • Scofflaw – a person who does not respect the law • Universalizing – a mental test to identify illogical actions • Fidelity bond – insurance policy that pays the employer money in the case of theft by employees
