  1. Christian Basics part 1 The Godhead What we can learn about God CHB 1 Godhead - Lecture 1 part 1 1 / 17

  2. Contents Introduction The Word of God Words used for God's name 1- 4 God's Character God’s Will God’s Sovereignty God's Work CHB 1 Godhead - Lecture 1 part 1 2 / 17

  3. It is the Christian belief that there are Three Persons in One God. These Three Persons - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit - are distinct from one another yet they share the same Divine Nature. Thus they are not three distinct gods, but one God; so God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit all (according to the Holy Bible) bear the character and attributes of God. There is supernatural power in the hearing (or reading) of the Word of God. It imparts faith to us. It changes us. Introduction 3 / 17

  4. The Word of God • The Bible reveals God to us - • The Old Testament and to a greater extent the New Testament indicate that God exists as a Trinity: • God the Father • God the Son • God the Holy Spirit • This is the Godhead 4 / 25 4 / 17

  5. In the Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament) the original word terms used for God’s names can be translated as follows: Believing that God exists and the Bible (Scripture) is the infallible Word of God, we as human beings believe that there is supernatural power in the hearing (the preaching, meditating and reading) of the Word of God • Words used for God`s Name - 1 5 / 17

  6. Elindicates might or strength, when used for God, the meaning is Almighty. Elohim (plural for El) this plural form is mostly used for God in the Old Testament. “In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and earth”. Genesis 1:1 El and Elohim - 2 6/ 17

  7. This word is often written as Jehovah. This is the personal name of God, as it was revealed to Moses and through Moses to Israel. The name Yahweh is translated as LORD. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” Exodus 20:7 • Yahweh - 3 7 / 17

  8. The name Adonai is translated as Lord in the Bible. It signifies ownership or mastership and indicates the truth that God is the owner of each member of the human family, and that He consequently claims devoted obedience of all. “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. Deuteronomy 10:17 Adonai – 4 8 / 17

  9. Lordship meant complete possession on the one hand and complete submission on the other. God is never a capricious or unjust Master and therefore does not ask what cannot be performed, and never requires a task for which He does not equip His servants. In other words, everything God asks us to do is good and just and can be accomplished as we trust Him to enable us to do all that He has asked us to do. Adonai – 4a 9 / 17

  10. Those things we see in the Bible that we strive to emulate, while being coached by the Holy Spirit, are found in God in their perfect form. We, as men, can lose or gain these attributes but God is the perfect example of love, goodness, mercy, grace, holiness, justice, glory etc. but these attributes are always an integral part of His being and do not change The Character of God 10/ 17

  11. There are some communicable attributes of God that we can relate to in our limited way. For example: Wisdom Proverbs Goodness Psalm 107 Righteousness Romans Justice Amos 5 Love 1 John 3 - 4 The Character of God -1 11/ 17

  12. There are incommunicable attributes found only in God that we cannot relate to. For example: Self existence (Relies on Self) Immutability (Unchangeable) Omniscience (All knowing) Omnipresent (Not limited by space) Omnipotent (Can do anything He desires) Eternity (Not limited by time) The Character of God - 2 12/ 17

  13. This expresses His self determination meaning He can do anything He desires in His unlimited power and Godhead. Because of His perfect attributes God will never do anything that is not according to His nature. God`s will can be seen as: His decreed will. What He says will happen! His perceived will. Understanding His Word The Will of God - 1 13/ 17

  14. God’s Sovereignty means that He is the Supreme Ruler who immanently and personally rules over all the affairs of the universe—and this includes our personal lives both as individuals and as a local body of believers. God’s sovereignty is a place of rest for the child of God, as well as a cause of worship. cf. Ps. 48:1; 95:3, 6. God`s will is backed by infinite wisdom and holiness Operates graciously and kindly Acts unconditionally Manifests God`s own glory The Will of God - 2 14/ 17

  15. Sin came into the world through Satan’s fall and his temptation of man by God’s permissive will. Genesis 3:1-19. The Will of God - 3 Temptation of Eve by Satan 15/ 17

  16. God’s mighty works are many and impressive. Records of God’s mighty deeds include the Creation of the heavens and the Earth, the destruction of the world by flood in the days of Noah, the plagues against the Egyptians, the feeding of the Israelites with manna during their wilderness journey, and the empowerment of the Israelites as they conquered and settled the land of Canaan. Many other remarkable events took place until the Coming of Jesus. The Work of God –Old Testament 16 / 17

  17. Declarations of God’s mighty works are focused around the coming of His Son. God’s activities were made known through the births and ministries of John the baptiser and Jesus, the miracles and ministries of Jesus and His Apostles, the coming of the Holy Spirit and the establishment of the church – God’s kingdom on earth. Except for the creation event, these mighty works were all observed by humanity. The Work of God –New Testament 17/ 17
