How to Dress Like a Pelican Pelham Memorial High School
Why School Dress Matters • At PMHS, we are committed to preparing you for a successful future. • How you present yourself can play an important role in the opportunities you receive.
The Pelham Pelican’s Dress Code • At PMHS, like other public high schools, we have a policy that dictates what clothing is appropriate for school. • The purpose is to avoid distracting or offending others, and to encourage you to dress appropriately for a given situation.
“Appropriate Dress” • What is appropriate for one situation, may not be for another. • Clothing can be beautiful, stylish, functional, expressive, elegant, or practical, but still not “appropriate” for school.
So What’s Not “Appropriate” at PMHS? • Revealing Clothing • Visible Underwear • Dangerous Footwear • Sunglasses and Hats • Offensive Words and Images • Promoting Alcohol, Drugs, or Violence
Revealing Clothing • Very Short Shorts • Very Short Skirts • Tube, Tank, Net, or Halter Tops • Spaghetti Straps • Plunging Necklines • Bare Midriffs • Sheer Garments
Why School Dress Matters • NO Thin-Strap or “Spaghetti Strap” Tank tops
Visible Underwear • Underwear should be completely covered by your outer clothing.
Dangerous Footwear • Shoes must be worn at all times. • Shoes that are a safety hazard are not allowed.
Offensive Words and Images • You may not wear items containing words or images that are: • Vulgar • Obscene • Libelous • Or denigrating to others
Promoting Alcohol, Drugs, or Violence • You may not wear items that encourage illegal or violent activities or promote or endorse the use of: • Alcohol • Tobacco • Illegal Drugs
If you violate the Pelham Dress Code • You may have to cover or remove an offending item of clothing. • You may have to change. • You can be subject to suspension.
Why should I dress appropriately? • To avoid distracting or disrupting others. • To learn how to function in a professional work/school environment. • To keep the focus on my educational and personal goals. • To demonstrate my pride in being a student at PMHS.
