Fur trade was huge • All along the Great Lakes region • Traded with Indians for fur • Montreal became the center of the fur industry Expansion of the French Empire • Louis Jolliet & Jacques Marquette (1673) • Mississippi river to Arkansas (turned back-didn’t want to anger the Spanish) • Rene-Robert de La Salle (1682) • Mississippi river to the Gulf of Mexico • Named region Louisiana (in honor of King Louis XIV) • Growth in New France • Growth very slow (Detroit, St. Louis, New Orleans, along the Great Lakes and Mississippi river
French became allies with Algonquian & Huron Indians (very respectful to indians) • Bitter enemies of the Iroquois New Netherlands and New Sweden(trade with the Indians attracted European nations) • Dutch (Henry Hudson) • Claimed lands between Delaware and Connecticut rivers (New Netherlands (New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Delaware) • 1624 Dutch West India Company (traded in Africa, Caribbean and the Americas) • Failed to attract many Dutch to the New Netherlands • Eventually allowed other Europeans settle in New Netherlands also practiced religious toleration
New Sweden • Also had a hard time attracting settlers • Video English Settlements • 1578 First charter granted for settlement (Queen Elizabeth) failed due to death of requester • 1583 Sir Walter Raleigh • Obtained a charter & settled in Virginia/North Carolina area • 1585 established a colony on Roanoke Island (life was difficult: fought with Indians and had little food) • 1587 Roanoke reestablished by John White (he left the island at the end of summer to get more supplies but didn’t return until the 1590 – COLONY DISAPPEARED) • Lost colony video
