  1. WELCOME TO AP LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION!!! Please make sure phones and IPods are powered off and put away.

  2. Mrs. Hernandez: • Mexican Catholic girl, born and raised in El Paso TX. • Attended girls Catholic school from K-12th grade. • UTEP Alumni: both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. • Worked in EPISD for thirteen years. • Beginning 10thyear at AISD. • Worked at TCC for two years: Comp I.

  3. Moved to DFW area in 2004 when I got married. • No biological children; two step-daughters and three step-grandkids.

  4. Answers to What Students Always Ask About Me: • Mexican parents from small towns in Mexico. Dad came to US as a child and Mom came to US when she got married. • I’m 100% bilingual; Spanish is my first language and I always spoke it at home while growing up. • I am white, Caucasian and Mexican because of my upbringing and culture. • Mexican/Latina is not a race, it’s an ethnicity!!

  5. Important Dates: • Summer Reading due by Fri, Aug 30. (10:00 PM electronic copy) • Wed-Thurs, Sept 4-5: test on literary terms • Fri, Sept 6: absolute last day to turn in Summer Reading for late grade • Fri, Sept 27: Summer Reading due date for new students who just enrolled in course

  6. First Six Weeks Preview: • The Awakening • Begin poetry • Begin Oedipus • Become familiar with AP Lit and Comp Test format

  7. AP Exam Format: • Section 1: multiple choice; (60 min) 45% of score; 55 questions; prose and poetry passages. • Section 2: Essays; (120 min) 55% of score. #1: poetry analysis (40 min) #2: prose analysis (40 min) short story, novel excerpt, or essay. #3: open essay. (40 min) Answer prompt with support from your own reading.
