Welcome to our January Newshound Editors Note Dear Brown Dog Member, Thank you to all of you (new or existing members) for choosing to support brown dog on our 2011 breast cancer campaign. So far we have 79 members registered to take part in this years challenge - so on behalf of the brown dog Trustee Board I would like welcome every single one of you to the team and to give you our pledge that we will do everything we can to make your weekend away next June as enjoyable as we can. We still have room for more people to join, so please feel free to ask friends, colleagues at work or family (over 18) to register . As you know next year we are once again running two parallel challenges to provide choice to our members. Whichever challenge you decide to do isn’t important- what is important is that we ‘the 2011 challenge team’ all try to raise as much money as we can to try and hit our real challenge of £50,000 – this won’t be easy! Fundraising is never easy as it takes a lot of time and effort and in this current climate it’s ever harder. Plus for those of you who return every year we appreciate it’s even harder still. So in addition to this months Newshound we have produced a ‘fund raising supplement’ which has lot’s of ideas, many of which have been tried and tested – we hope you find this useful. Feel free to contact any of us on the Trustee Board to talk about fund-raising as we are keen to help you as much as you can. Hope you find this news-hound useful and informative M Mark Storer – Founder Member (on behalf of brown dog Trustees)
2010 Skin Cancer Campaign – What a success! A reflection on last years campaign and an update on funds collected so far • Thank you once again to everyone who took part in our 2010 Skin Cancer Appeal joining either • the Wordsworth or Tiggy Winkle challenges which broke 5 brown dog records; • Record – first time brown dog have organised two challenges on the same day • Record – largest number of members taking part in a challenge – 87 • Record – highest number of new members joining a challenge - 57 • Record - most money ever raised on a brown dog campaign - £60,000 collected so far • Record – first time the hospital we were supporting actually joined us on the challenge • Congratulations everyone on such an achievement! • On Friday 3rd December a cheque for £30,000 was handed to the Leicester Hospitals Trust – you can see a full report on the page after the next page. • With the additional funds raised over and above this £30,000 we are currently looking to try and purchase a second (different type of) skin cancer scanner – we will update you on this as soon as we can. • In summary the Skin Cancer Appeal was without doubt our biggest success so far and not only did we break all those brown dog records, we were also blessed (once again) with glorious weather and most important the feedback we received from you was nothing short of fantastic – you see a selection of comments on the next page)
2010 Skin Cancer Campaign – Feedback What you had to say having completed the challenge Hi Everyone, Words cannot begin to express our gratitude for the mammoth effort of all the Brown Dog Team. Saturday was just amazing and I felt quite emotional at the end of it all (as no doubt you gathered at the speeches!) I couldn’t believe that such an enormous target could be reached. We are over the moon that Brown Dog chose to support our appeal here in the dermatology department in Leicester. It is very humbling to realise that people came from all parts of the country and from all walks of life (pardon the pun) to raise money for our patients in Leicestershire, Rutland and the surrounding counties. We are always striving to offer the best possible service in our department and the Molemax 111 will help elevate that service to one of the best in the country. It will help us immensely with the early diagnosis of malignant melanoma, particularly in those patients who have many moles and therefore have a higher risk of developing this type of skin cancer. Early diagnosis is crucial to improving prognosis and cure rates. . “THANKYOU” seems a completely inadequate word to describe our gratitude to you all, but never-the-less I offer a heartfelt thank to you all from the dermatology department, the UHL NHS Trust and, most importantly, from our patients. Bring on next years challenge! With Very Best Wishes, Joy Osborne Department of Dermatology Leicester Royal Infirmary “I just wanted to say thank you ever so much for getting me involved with this years challenge, I have never attempted anything so challenging in all my life but I've also never enjoyed something so much either. I am aching all over but it was worth it! The weekend was an absolutely amazing and inspiring experience. I've never been involved with anything like that before and although I give regularly to some worthy causes that I'm interested in it was something else to be involved in the challenge. On a personal level that’s the hardest challenge I've put myself through both physically and mentally but I felt a great sense of achievement at the end of it. Although it was really tough I actually really enjoyed it. I thought the people who took part were 1st class and it was so easy to just wander in and out of different conversations. I thought the whole event once again was superb, the challenge, the weather, the dinner, and most of all the people contributed to a terrific event and to raise so much money was just fantastic. And to do it all with my son joining me for the fist time just topped it all off. Just wanted to say a very big thank you to everyone for all of your incredible support and encouragement during the challenge. It was a real pleasure meeting such a wonderful team of people and as mentioned by Ian, raise an amazing amount of money for such a worthy cause. A special big thank you to Mark and the Brown Dog team who were excellent. I know it takes a lot to pull this together but you are a truly wonderful team and your encouragement certainly kept this old codger going throughout the day... very much appreciated. Some wonderful memories, now to try and climb those stairs!

2010 Skin Cancer Campaign Presentation of the Skin Cancer Scanner On 3rd December Mark Storer and Richard Parkes represented brown dog Trustees and Members when they presented a cheque for £35,000 to executive members of the University Leicester Hospital to complete the purchase the Molemax III Skin Cancer Scanner – which is now in situ and being utilised every day. Joy Osborne did a presentation to everyone and explained how the scanner worked and the value it would bring not only to LUH, but also to other hospitals and to GP’s in increasing the awareness and detection of melanoma cancer. Joy then showed everyone the brass plaque that had been made to fit on the machine She explained that the room being prepared to store all the scanned images would be called the ‘brown dog room’ and a further plaque was being made. She then announced that all the hospital staff had agreed that the scanner needed a user-friendly real name that would be simpler to use on a day to day basis – she announced that the Molemax Skin Cancer Scanner from now on would be called affectionately ‘Colin’ (in memory of Mark’s dog Colin who was the brown dog – who died in May last year) Richard and Mark were thanked by everyone at the presentation and asked to pass on this gratitude to everyone who took part in the 2010 challenges and raised such a fantastic amount of money. Mark and Richard said they were very proud of what we have all achieved and to be part of brown dog. Left to right......
