The events leading up • There was relative peace in 1850 but it was only temporary • Stephen Douglas, a supporter of manifest destiny and popular sovereignty, proposed a bill to organize the Nebraska territory. • to get the votes he needed he included in the bill that slavery in the new territory would be decided by popular sovereignty in order to please southerners
New England Emigrant Aid Company • The north responded to the bill immediately, the New England emigrant aid company sent 1,200 settlers to help secure the area as a free territory. • An abolitionist minister Henry Beecher armed the settlers.
Rumors and southern response • The south had heard that 20,000 northerners were on they're way to Kansas • Thousands of southerners from Missouri crossed the border into Kansas to vote for keeping slavery • Pro-slavery won the vote
David Atchkinson • Southerners were lead by radical senator David Atchkinson • He encouraged violence in the defense of the institution of the law
Violence breaks out • There were several small attacks, usually against abolitionists • In total 55 people were killed in bleeding Kansas
