  2. Drug Classification • Narcotic drug • Narcotic drugs blunt the senses • Used in medicine to relieve pain, causes pain sedation, induces sleep

  3. Visual Characteristics • usually brownish or white powder • sometimes black and sticky (A.K.A. black tar heroin) • could be smoked, injected, snorted/sniffed

  4. Short Term Effects • clammy hands • restlessness • muscle and bone pain • insomnia • diarrhea and vomiting • cold flashes with goose bumps

  5. Long Term Effects • infection of heart lining and valves • Collapsed veins • liver and kidney disease • contains toxic contaminants or additives that can clog blood vessels leading to the lungs, liver, kidneys, or brain causing permanent damage to vital organs • death

  6. Well Documented Case of Abuse Kurt Cobain - Went missing from rehab center in 1994, found dead in Seattle on April 8th from a gunshot wound to the head after allegedly taking a large dose of Heroin.
