Lesson Objectives • To introduce the uses of wikis to the students. • To have the students choose a position on an issue and defend it
Behavioural Objective • The students will be able to choose a position on an issue after reading a controversial article on cloning. • OR • Behavioural objective: After the completion of this wiki / blog assignment, students will be able to evaluate a controversial issue, state their position, and critique the opinion of fellow bloggers.
Procedure • Students will be introduced towhat a wiki is and how to use one. • Students are taken to the computer lab to work on the wiki assignment • Students will access the wiki at www.kylessciencewiki.wikispaces.com • This address will be written on the white board in the computer lab
Procedure • Students will follow the instructions located on the wiki, including reading the article and complete the blog during class time
Procedure • For homework, students will be required to log onto the wiki by 9:00p.m. to make their posts.
Assessment • Assessment will take place 2 times, as there are 2 parts to this assignment. • While the students are working in the computer lab, the teacher will be walking around, answering questions and observing to see how well the students can use the blog.
Assessment • The teacher will assess again via the required online blog posts and discussion forum. • Teacher will look for well written, thought out answers. Teacher will also look for appropriate blog use; that is, polite answers and respect shown towards classmates’ opinion.
Rationale • The technology used in this lesson was used because it is conducive to student reflection. • This lesson included reading fellow students’ opinions and commenting on 2 of them. • Using an online blog, students were able to view all their classmates’ opinions, and then to post a response on the “discussions” page about their classmates’ opinions.
Rationale • How does it enhance the instructional process? • Using online forums makes students excited to complete an assignment. • Through the required discussion portion, students had to read and ponder their classmates’ thoughts and feelings of the issue. This may not have occurred if this activity was done in the classroom.
