1.4 Networking Categories of Computers
Stand Alone • A computer that can perform functions without accessing a fileserver or a larger computer.
Network • Computers linked together to share resources such as software, printers, and storage space.
LAN (Local Area Network) • A network where the linked computers are relatively close together (In the same building). For example, all the computers in our school are networked together.
WAN (Wide Area Network) • A network where the linked computers are much further apart (Separate buildings). For example, our school’s network is also linked to all the other schools in Dufferin-Peel.
Fileserver • A computer that manages information on a hard drive withing a LAN and provides service to the terminals on the network by making information and software available when needed.
Workstation (Terminal) • A computer that has the ability to use software and printers on the network.
