METEOROLOGICAL APPLICATIONS EARTH IMAGERY • VHRR & DRT • Visible - 2 X 2 km • Infrared - 8 X 8 km • Water vapour - 8 X 8 km • CCD - Better than 1 kmLaunch • Launch Date : 12th SEPT 2002 • PSLV – C4 Kalpana-1 Geostationary (74 deg East longitude) METSAT, renamed as Kalpana - 1 on February 5, 2003 after the Indian born American Astronaut Dr. KalpanaChawla, who died on February 1, 2003 in the US Space Shuttle Columbia disaster is the first in the series of exclusive meteorological satellites built by ISRO.
INSAT – 3A Geostationary (93.5 deg East longitude) Launch Date :10.04.2003 Meteorological payload- Very High Resolution Radiometer (VHRR) with 2 km resolution in visible band and 8 km resolution in infrared and water vapour band - Charged Coupled Device (CCD) camera operating in visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared band with 1 km resolution.- Data Relay Transponders (DRT) INSAT – 3A also carries another transponder for Satellite Aided Search and rescue (SAS & R) as part of India’s contribution to the international Satellite Aided Search Programme.
