Why I Chose My Topic • Wanted a fun and interesting topic • Wanted to know if all pageants were like the ones seen on TV. http://i2.fc-img.com/fc03img/Comcast_CIM_Prod_Fancast_Image/42/927/1324656353668_Toddlers_&_Tiaras_2048x1024_Overlay_590_295.jpg
Glitz Pageant Attire What typical glitz pageant contestants wear while competing… • Expensive dresses and talent costumes • Full make-up • Hair extensions • Spray tans • Fake nails • Flippers http://www.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/articles/41772-review--toddlers-and-tiaras/1307546019_toddlers-290.jpg
Pictured is Laney, a 4 year-old that competes in glitz pageants. The “after” picture was sent in to a glitz pageant’s photo contest. BEFORE AFTER http://glitzygirlzz.blogspot.com/2011/09/glitz-vs-natural.html
Glitz Pageant Time Devotion • Most glitz pageant contestants practice everyday during pageant season. • They often miss school because of traveling to a far away pageant. • School and education is no longer the child’s main focus – pageants are.

Damaging Psychological Effects • Girls become obsessed with their appearance. • Feeling of always being judged can lead to depression. • Need to be thin and pretty can lead to eating disorders • Constantly being compared to their peers can cause insecurity.
Interesting Facts • The incidence of alcohol and drug abuse is higher among child performers. • In the US, over 100,000 children under 12 compete in beauty pageants each year. • Parents sometimes lie about their child’s age so that winning will be easier. • One pageant can cost over $2,000.
My Conclusion Glitz pageants to teach children the following wrong values: • Too much emphasis on artificial beauty • You don’t have to be well-rounded or educated if you’re pretty • Beauty is something that can be judged • Superficial mindset http://www.telephonoscope.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/toddlers-and-tiaras-32.jpg

Problems • Procrastination • Taking pictures of the kids Successes • Ability to work well with children • Enlighten people about pageants
What I Learned About Myself • Learn well doing hands-on activities and observing • Enjoy teaching children • If I could do it again, I’d volunteer with more than one pageant
How This Will Help Me • People skills • Practice for future presentations / projects • Time management
