Carbon Footprint of the U.S. Population: Causes and Spatial-Temporal Pattern Class Project Me/ENV 449, 2007 Roger Rowe Instructor: R. Husar
Introduction • Purpose – • Find VMT by vehicle type • Find total VMT historically • Approach – • Began on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and linked to other government sites. • Contacted BTS, US Census Bureau, Energy Information Administration, and Federal Highway Administration. • Major Findings – • The US Census Bureau provides state by state light truck VMT traveled in their Vehicle Inventory and Use Surveys. These surveys were sponsored by the Department of Transportation and conducted every five years from 1963-2002. This is the same report the Energy Information Administration (EIA) is examining for use in determining commercial highway vehicle energy consumption and expenditures for 2002. • Total VMT are available in the BTS’s State Transportation Profiles for 1995-2003.
