Do Now Objective • Write the formula for Aluminum Iodide • Name the ionic compound AlBr3 Chem10 IC42 – Ionic Compounds I can recognize the electron structure of ionic bonds and ionic compounds, as well as define polyatomic ions, ionic bonds and ionic compounds. I can draw the Lewis Structure of ionic compounds. I can name ionic compounds using standard IUPAC nomenclature.
Polyatomic Ions • Polyatomic Ion: an ion consisting of two or more atoms linked by covalent bonds. • Examples: • NH41+ • NO31- • SiF62-
Kriss-Kross with Polyatomic Ions • Polyatomic ions can be balanced with the krisskross method just like regular ionic compounds! • Write the cation (+) first and the anion (-) second. • Krisskross the ion charges • If there is more than one polyatomic ion write parentheses () around it before you krisskross
Kriss-Kross with Polyatomic Ions • Example: Aluminum and chromate • Write the cation (+) first and the anion (-) second. Al3+ CrO42- • Krisskross the ion charges • If there is more than one polyatomic ion write parentheses () around it before you krisskross
Kriss-Kross with Polyatomic Ions • Example: Aluminum and dichromate • Write the cation (+) first and the anion (-) second. Al3+ CrO42- • Krisskross the ion charges Al2CrO4 3 • If there is more than one polyatomic ion write parentheses () around it before you krisskross
Kriss-Kross with Polyatomic Ions • Example: Aluminum and chromate • Write the cation (+) first and the anion (-) second. Al3+ CrO42- • Krisskross the ion charges Al2CrO4 3 • If there is more than one polyatomic ion write parentheses () around it before you krisskross Al2(CrO4)3 aluminum chromate
KrissKross with Polyatomic Ions • Example 2: Ammonium and Chlorine • NH41+ Cl1- • NH41Cl 1 • NH4Cl ammonium chloride
KrissKross with Polyatomic Ions • Guided Practice: Magnesium Carbonate • Write the cation (+) first and the anion (-) second. • Krisskross the ion charges • If there is more than one polyatomic ion write parentheses () around it before you krisskross
KrissKross with Polyatomic Ions • Guided Practice: Hydronium Sulfate • Write the cation (+) first and the anion (-) second. • Krisskross the ion charges • If there is more than one polyatomic ion write parentheses () around it before you krisskross
Kriss-Kross with Polyatomic Ions • Use the kriss-krossmethod to write the balanced ionic compounds with the following ions. • Sodium and Nitrate: • Lithium and Cyanide: • Magnesium and Chromate: • Ammonium and Oxygen • Calcium and Nitrite: • Potassium and Thiosulfate
Kriss-Kross with Polyatomic Ions • Use the kriss-krossmethod to write the balanced ionic compounds with the following ions. • Sodium and Nitrate: NaNO3 • Lithium and Cyanide: LiCN • Magnesium and Chromate: MgCrO4 • Ammonium and Oxygen: (NH4)2O • Calcium and Nitrite: Ca(NO2)2 • Potassium and Thiosulfate: K2S2O3
