  2. Igneous Rocks • Form from the crystallization of molten material • Extrusive: smooth and glassy • Ex: Basalt • Intrusive: cool slowly, develop large crystals • Ex: Granite First Rocks on Earth were Igneous

  3. Metamorphic Rocks • Form when other rocks are exposed to high temperatures and pressures • Examples: quartzite, marble, slate, gneiss

  4. Sedimentary Rocks • Formed from the products of erosion and weathering of other rocks • Two Types • Clastic: particles of weathered rock • Ex: Limestones,gypsum, sandstone • Carbonates: fragments of marine organisms • Ex: coal, shale FOSSILS
