  3. Review of last time • Here are a couple of reminders. • Make sure you put your name in your text book. Bring it on Friday. • Some grades have been posted. Be sure to check your grades regularly. Feel free to ask if something seems incorrect. • Portfolios have been set up for you. Please put graded work in your portfolio. • Oooooooooh! New books! Read Write Speak Listen

Reading Assessment • In the reading assessment, three reading traits are scored on a scale of 1-6. • A six means you couldn’t get any better on that trait. • A one means you couldn’t get any worse. • Ones and sixes are rare. • Everyone will get 20 class points for completing this assignment, regardless of his or her assessment score.   6. Reading Assessment • In the reading assessment, three reading traits are scored on a scale of 1-6. The traits are listed below. • Demonstrate Understanding – You “get the gist” and can explain the basic events of the story. • Develop an Interpretation – You can find deeper, unstated meaning in the text. • Analyze text – You can identify literary elements in the text.   7. Reading Assessment • You are about to work on the first reading assessment of the year. We may do more as the year goes on. • You have three tasks. • Read the story. • Annotate the story. It may work best to do this as you go. More on annotation in a minute. • Complete the assessment sheet. Read Write Speak Listen

  8. Reading Assessment • Completing the assessment sheet. • Write a summary of the story. Your summary should more or less fit in the space provided. Read Write Speak Listen

  9. Reading Assessment • Completing the assessment sheet. • Complete the open mind diagram. Use words and images to indicate the narrator’s attitude. Use quotes from the story if you like. Read Write Speak Listen

  10. Reading Assessment • Completing the assessment sheet. • Find some similes (a comparison using like or as). Write down the simile in the left column and explain the simile in the right hand column. Read Write Speak Listen

  11. Reading Assessment • Annotation • Annotation means that you will provide explanatory notes about what you read. This helps me know what’s going on inside your head (er, at least as far as the reading is concerned). • Annotation will feel a little artificial, especially if you are a strong reader.
