Imagine that you are a foreigner arriving in the US for the first time… • What sort of things would influence your initial impression of the American people? • What would our manner of dress convey? Do you think that this would create an accurate impression? • In your opinion, how important is fashion to American cultural identity?

  3. Each country has its own standards of dress and many, the US included, have large fashion industries. • What canwe hope to discover about a culture via its fashion? Are high fashion and day-to-day fashion related? • What things come to mind when you think of French fashion? Can you name some French designers or brands?

  4. Now look at the text on p. 164. • France is not the only francophone country to host a large fashion event. What other two examples does the text give? • Why might it be beneficial to a country to host such an event? Economically? Culturally? • We have discussed how fashion can represent certain elements of the culture that creates it. Bearing this in mind, how would you expect FIMA and Paris fashion week to be similar? Different?
