In-house archival holdings • Western Libraries’ Archives and Research Collections Centre (ARCC) contains many rare, printed titles in first and early editions, from the 16th to 19th centuries. • materials located in ARCC are identified in the library catalogue by the location code “ARCC specol NO LOAN”. • ARCC’s hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. No evening or weekend service.
Early English Books Online (EEBO) • EEBO contains full text, full image of materials published in England, as well as non-English language materials printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and British North America from 1473 to 1700. • Find EEBO materials by searching the shared library catalogue, or by using EEBO’s own search engine.
Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) • ECCO contains the full text and full image of all materials published in England, as well as all non-English language materials printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and British North America from 1701-1800. • Find ECCO titles by searching the shared library catalogue, or by using ECCO’s own search engine.
English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) • ESTC lists materials printed in Great Britain and its dependencies in any language, as well as materials printed in English anywhere in the world. • ESTC contains a comprehensive bibliography from the beginning of print to 1800, including all recorded English monographs printed between 1473 and 1800. • Complete text of many ESTC citations may be found EEBO or ECCO.
Remember secondary sources: • subject encyclopedias and dictionaries are helpful starting places that enable you to begin your research using reliable sources. • more reliable and authoritative than Google or Wikipedia. • online databases such as Historical Abstracts and Bibliography of British and Irish History can also lead to additional sources in scholarly journals.
Historical Abstracts • an online database containing citations of scholarly books and articles on non-North American world history. • link-outs to online full text are included where available. • covers the time period of historical events occurring from 1450 to present.
Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) • an online database containing lists of scholarly books and articles on all periods of British and colonial history. • link-outs to online full text are included where available. • formerly known as Royal Historical Society Bibliography
Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford DNB) • contains 58,000 biographies of significant people in the history of the British Isles, as well as Britain’s colonies; current to 2009. • allows searching and retrieval of all biographies connected with each other or to a particular event. • can also be useful in locating information about historians.
What if Western Libraries doesn’t have an item? • If Western Libraries doesn’t have the title or journal article you need, Interlibrary Loan is an excellent option if you can wait 7-10 days for the material to arrive. • Interlibrary Loan is a free service • Ask Research & Instructional Services staff for help setting up an Interlibrary Loan account.
