Important Functions • Nucleus: • fuels the cell; gives it energy • Myelin Sheath: • Speed up electrical impulses • Protect the axon
Neurotransmitters • Chemicals produced in the cell • Released and have two options: • Info is passed to new cell • Transmission stops (inhibition)
Neurotransmitters (cont.) • Oversupply or undersupply has been linked to diseases: • Oversupply • acetylcholine (movement, memory) paralysis and Alzheimer’s • Dopamine (learning, emotional arousal, movement) schizophrenia • Undersupply • Dopamine Parkinson’s • Norepinephrine (memory, learning) & serotonin (mood) depression
