  3. How are these themes portrayed in the novel and what is their purpose? • Discrimination is show through the way that the Hazaras are treated in the novel. Especially the discrimination shown by Assef to Hassan. • “We are the true Afghans, not this flat-nose here… They dirty our blood.” • Discrimination is shown through the double standards that apply to Men and Woman. Especially with Soraya and her past. • Bigotry is shown through concrete views in which characters have on the world. Especially Baba’s view on religion. • “There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft.
