  1. A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF COMMON METALS IN LOCAL WATER SOURCES UNIQUE DRILLING FLUIDS, INC.

  2. INTRODUCTION • ANALYZE POTABLE WATER FOR COMMON METALS • TEXAS COMMISION ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY • MAXIMUM CONTAMINANT LEVEL1 SET BY STATE OF TEXAS

  3. SPECIFIC AIM • QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF COMMON METALS • COST EFFECTIVENESS • VARIOUS SOUCES OF WATER (ARLINGTON, HURST, AND SOUTHLAKE)

  4. COMMONLY FOUND METALS • ALUMINUM- 303.9 nm λ, Aluminum Cathode Lamp • IRON- 248.3 nm λ, Iron Cathode Lamp • COPPER-324.7 nm λ, Copper Cathode

  5. INSTRUMENTATION3 • FLAME ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETER • THERMO SCIENTIFIC –SOLAR M SERIES AA SPECTROMETER • SAMPLE IS ASPIRATED INTO FLAME & ATOMIZED • LIGHT BEAM, DIRECTED INTO MONOCHROMATOR & ONTO A DECTECTOR • DETECTOR MEASURES AMOUNT OF LIGHT ABSORBED BY THE ATOMIZED ELEMENT

  6. MATERIALS • TWO SAMPLES, RANDOMLY SELECTED • CITIES OF ARLINGTON, HURST, & SOUTHLAKE • EACH TESTED IN TRIPLICATE • MEAN & STANDARD DEVIATION REPORTED • PER METAL & PER SAMPLE

  7. METHOD • PREPARATION OF STANDARDS • SLIT WIDTH • ABSORBANCE MEASUREMENTS • PRIMARY AND SECONDARY WAVELENGTH SELECTIONS
