  2. Rationale • Focus on ELs provides a focus for the majority of students in the district • Provides daily accountability • Strategies are embedded in the teaching process • Strategies work together to provide effective instruction

  3. Strategy #1: Content and Language Objectives • Begin in lesson planning • Provide a two-fold purpose for instruction (Content and ELD) concurrently • Supported by research • Best Delivery System for Language is Content (Expository)

  4. Strategy #2: Graphic Organizers Tied to Writing • Provide students with the next step to organizing thought • Reduce the linguistic demands of thought • Provide bricks and mortar for ELs • Begins the process of thought and carries it through into the writing process

  5. Strategy #3: Academic Language Scaffolding • Provides students with the framework to tackle the academic demands of content areas • Replaces the need for teaching vocabulary in isolation • (Flash Cards, Dictionary Work, etc.) • Provides students with a usable, future skill

  6. Strategy #4 :Opportunities for Interaction • “EL’s benefit from structured opportunites to use the target language in multiple settings and across content areas.” Making Content Comprehensible • Important balance is needed between teacher and student and student to student.
