CSI Unit Developed from: • http://falconnet.peddie.org/faculty/ilyublinskaya/index.html Vandalism 101 This is one of a series of units that requires students to think creatively, analyze critically and problem solve in a group environment.
Vandalism 101 • Scenario: Students and teachers arrive at a high school where the night before vandals used black paint to scrawl offensive phrases and pictures on school front entry and entry sidewalk . • Clues: Footprints from spilled paint extending 10 strides from origin.
Interviews have established 3 prime suspects • Emily, a 15 years old, 5’1”, 9th grader at the HS who had received an in school suspension for inappropriate “art” work. • Mr. McCauley, a 20 year old, 6’3” substitute who was just fired for his inability to control the class. • Phillip, a 16 year old, 5’7”, 10th grader who was suspended for smoking and selling cigarettes on campus.
Stride Pattern Analysis Laboratory • Objective: critically analyze stride pattern found at crime scene and compare to prime suspects. • Materials Needed: Computer with Geometer’s Sketchpad, TI-83, CBR, link cable and graph link, tape measure, poster board and photo evidence from crime scene. • Student Handouts: walking and running stride data, stride and height exploration, stride length and speed as related to height
111.35. Precalculus TEKS Covered • c(3)A,B,C,D; c(4)A,B; c(6) A,B • Record of activities will include data collection records from CBR and GSP represented in tables, graphically and symbolically. • Analysis of data will include an oral and written report summarizing the data and rationale for conclusions. • Discussion on the importance of error in regression, role of repetition, controls and variables.
Use to Compare to Strides Found at Crime Scene Stride vs Height
Jake’s Run and Walk • Walk • y = 1.29x -.87 • Slope: 1.29 • Run • y = 1.728x -.135 • Slope: 1.73
Stride vs. Height Stride vs. Height
Perpetrator stride between 1 – 1.32 m • Perpetrator is Phillip who stand 5’7” or 1.7 m
Slope: 1.8 Speed of perpetrator: 1.8 Y = 4.615x2 - 17.12x + 17.6
