The Passion Mapping™ Model-Helping Teens Connect Dreams To Education™ Researched and Presented by Darrell “Coach D” Andrews Education Consultant/Motivational Speaker/Author
Perception Modification • We must begin to realize that a student’s personal dreams are the driving force behind their actions and behaviors. • All of our children have gifts; however, most do not comprehend it. We can help them begin to realize they are gifted in their own unique way. • A student who connects to a personal affinity is a student who will begin to see the relevance of their education experience.
HYPE Philosophies • Kids are not committed to programs, kids are committed to people! • A student with a dream is a student with a future; however, a student with a dream is fueled by a caring adult who believes in their dreams!
HYPE RID Factor • Relationships – Rationale: Successful students are motivated by associating with individuals who support educational excellence. • Identity – Rationale: Students who are proud of their identity thrive in any environment. • Dreams– Rationale: Pursuit of a dream is the motivating force behind student academic success.
Passion Mapping Components • Passion Pathways™ • Theory of Multiple Intelligences • The Passion Maps™ • Student Research & Support
1. Passion Pathways™ The Passion Pathways are five vehicles used to help a person identify a life’s purpose. • Lifetime Infatuation • Vision Introspection • Influence of Others • Trauma • Frustration
Passion Pathways Exercise Think of someone in your family, a former student or a good friend who took their personal affinity and turned it into a career. What Pathway was the primary factor in achieving their personal passion? • Student/Youth/Other: • Pathway
2. Multiple Intelligences Dr. Howard Gardner create the MI Theory due to his belief that we we all were born with certain talents and gifts. • Linguistic-”Word Smart” • Logical-Mathematical-”Number/Reasoning Smart” • Spatial-”Picture Smart” • Bodily-Kinesthetic-”Body Smart” • Musical-”Music Smart” • Interpersonal-”People Smart” • Intrapersonal-”Self Smart” • Naturalist-Nature Smart”
MI Exercise Think of a few students (youth) that you work with. (Another example can be one of your own children.) Name a few that exhibit one of the MI’s and give us an example of something they do that confirms their affinity.
3. Passion Mapping™ The purpose of the Passion Map™ is to expand on the information identified in the Passion Pathway and MI Process. It helps students broaden their scope of career possibilities by identifying several core areas of interest within a personal passion.
Passion Map™ Components • Passion Map™ • Academic Competencies • Possible College Majors • “Colleague” Research • Affinity Support Systems • Project Papers
Passion Map™ Passion Maps™ can be used by schools, after-school programs, community organizations, mentoring programs, government agencies and even parents to help youth expand their scope of possibilities within a personal passion.
PM Exercise In your groups discuss some of the student passions you see in your school or organization. If you are an Elementary School, what typical gifts or abilities do you see in your students? Fill out the Passion Mapping™ form and discuss how this personalization strategy can improve student success in your school or organization. Be prepared to discuss with the group.
4. Student Research & Support Colleague Research-Have students research individuals who have achieved success in their area of passion. Include this information in their passion projects. Affinity Support Systems-Identify mentors-connect with parents and solicit others who can become a support to students while they are working on their passion projects. Project Papers-For as little as one month up to one year, have students research the process of achieving their passion. In this paper include dates, timelines, potential colleges, trade schools, internships and most importantly, benefits.
