US Seizes North Korean Cargo Ship, Escalating Tensions

The United States has seized a North Korean cargo ship for allegedly evading international sanctions, heightening tensions between the two countries. The ship was found to be carrying coal in violation of restrictions and smuggling. This seizure comes on the same day that North Korea launched suspected short-range missiles. The US Justice Department asked a federal judge to grant ownership of the vessel, claiming payments made through American banks. The seizure is part of the US campaign of "maximum pressure" against North Korea.

  1. US seizes North Korean cargo ship

  2. The United States seized a North Korean cargo ship that was allegedly using to evade international sanctions. The seizure is likely to heighten tensions between the two countries. This seizure comes on the same day that North Korea was reported to have launched two projectiles suspected to be short-range missiles. The 17,000-ton cargo ship, called the Wise Honest, was stopped in Indonesia last year after it was found to be carrying coal (in other words violating the restrictions and smuggling). The ship's captain was then charged with violating Indonesian law, and last July, the U.S. filed an action to seize the ship. On Thursday, the Justice Department asked a federal judge to give the U.S. ownership of the vessel— the same thing prosecutors do when they seek to take ownership of planes or boats used by drug smugglers. The Justice Department says the U.S. is entitled to take this action because payments to maintain and equip the vessel were made through American banks. The US and the United Nations have said that North Korea has used illicit sales of its coal to fund the country's nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles program. Justice Department officials called the seizure the first of its kind, and said it was part of the US campaign of "maximum pressure" against the North Korean government. Although it was announced yesterday, government authorities said the ship was "recently taken into custody" but declined to provide an exact date for the transfer of custody.

  3. In Other News • Emotions are running high as prosecutors prepare to bring charges against two teens accused of attacking their suburban Denver charter school on Tuesday, killing one classmate and injuring eight others. The pair are due in court Friday amid many questions about the shooting, how it was planned, and whether it could have been prevented. Authorities say the student who died, Kendrick Castillo, saved lives as he and two other students rushed at least one of the shooters. A school security guard is credited by his boss with disarming and confronting the other shooter. But aside from those details, many questions remain about the how and why of this attack, and investigators have persuaded a judge to temporarily keep most court records and reports secret. Some classmates have suggested bullying may have played a role. • The United States has escalated its trade war with China, hiking tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese exports hours after trade talks held in Washington failed to produce a breakthrough. Tariffs on the targeted exports increased from 10% to 25% at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday, prompting a swift rebuke from Beijing. The Chinese government expressed "deep regret over the development" and pledged to take "necessary countermeasures.“ The Trump administration's decision to impose new taxes on Chinese exports comes after the United States accused China of backtracking on commitments made during recent negotiations on trade. Trump has repeatedly slammed China for indulging in what he says are unfair trade practices, particularly with regards to access to its giant market, intellectual property and technology transfers. • Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown gave high praise for Jimmy Butler in the team’s pivotal Game 6 win vs. the Toronto Raptors to force a Game 7. The final game of the series will be played on Sunday night.
