An Overview of the Christian Story HRT3M – Mr. K. Brooks
Problems and a solution • Reading the bible in bits and pieces • Disconnects from the grand story of the Bible • Need to learn to read the Bible as a “whole”
The story • Not just a guidebook or commands • Narrative – God’s own story • Not our search for God, but God’s search for us
The four chapters • Creation • Fall • Redemption • Consummation
The characters • God – divine protagonist • Satan – antagonist • God’s people – agonists • Plot resolution – redemption and reconciliation
Act 1 - Creation • God’s story – begins with God • “In the beginning God …” (Genesis) • God is before all, the cause of all, above all, and is the goal of all • Humans – God’s own likeness • Image – enjoyed the vision of God and lived in fellowship with God • Key texts – Genesis 1 + 2
Act 2 – The Fall • Men coveted more godlikeness – chose it against creatureliness and dependence • God’s wrath …. Terrible consequences • Lost three things: • Vision of God, became idolaters • Distorted the divine image in us – slaves of sin • Lost the divine presence • Key text – Genesis 3 + Romans 1 (goes right until the end in Rev 21)
Act 3 - Redemption • God = mercy, love, justice • Abraham – nations to be blessed • Israel – God’s people – care; cycle of rebellion • Too much sin – covenant curses of Deut. 26 • Promise for the future – a new son of David; outpouring of God’s Spirit; includes the Gentiles
Act 3 - Redemption • Final “Son of David” is God Himself • Jesus Christ became a man, endured a horrible death and a death defeating resurrection • Bore the full weight of the guilt and punishment of our rebellion • Restores our vision of God; makes it possible to be restored to the image of God; through the Spirit – with us in fellowship
Act 4 - Consummation • Still being written … • John 11:25-26 • End of death and pain • Great justice … • Restoration of creation with a new heaven and earth (Rev. 21-22)
