Kevin Day Axiom Foundations LLC
Axiom Foundations LLC • Foundation Repair Services, Inc. • Specialty Contracting Business • Charlotte, NC • Started in August, 2004 • 50/50 Partnership • Both active in running the daily operations
How it Formed • Previous work history • Brandon - employee • Employer was bought & sold • Not happy with ownership/direction • Wanted something different
How it Was • Beginning was good • Worked very hard to get started • Had common goals • Very focused on the same things • Growing the business by any means • Spent lots of time together
What we were(what He wanted) • Business in its Infancy • Both partners serving as TECHNICIANS • Business and owners are one and the same • We were the business
What we were becoming(What I wanted) • Business moving to Adolescence • I was becoming a MANAGER, he wanted to remain a TECHNICIAN • I wanted to separate from daily operations and build a team
Cracks in the Dam • Joint decision - grow commercial business • Hired “Commercial Manager” in May 2009 • Commercial growth and expansion – at the expense of residential • Separate pursuits: Residential vs. Commercial
The Approach to Split • Most important – Keep it amicable • Free each of us to chase our own dreams without dragging the other along for the ride • Decide in detail exactly what we each want/need before bringing in attorney • Use only one attorney and one CPA
How it Dissolved • Asset Split • Employee Split • Existing Customer Split • Agreed up front that issues would arise that we had not foreseen – work them out as they came up • Help each other if/when we can
Going Solo • Starting Over with a New Direction • Quicker Decision Making • More Flexibility • No more TENSION • All effort pointed to the right goal
Lessons Learned • Make decision - April when we both felt the same way • Treat it like a business rather than a personal engagement • More consistent communication along the way • Method for accountability for each partner
