  2. Summary 7-year-old Sam is an adventurer. He loves airplanes, radios and he loves to build things. One day he finds a pile of cardboard on the side of the street and uses it to build a cubby house in his backyard. He starts his creation and has flashbacks of his parents always arguing, his father never home and his 16-year-old brother abusing him. As he reminisces, he builds the walls and roof together with tape and glue in an attempt to build a place of security. On a cold rainy evening, his parents have the toughest fight yet, leaving his mother to pack her bags and leave and his father aimlessly walking the streets drunk. Sam runs out and hides in his ‘safe house’. His cardboard home begins to sink in the rain. Sam’s older brother finds him, sees his misery and holds him inside, andthe safe house begins to fall apart and disintegrate. Sam’s safe house is an attempt to fix all the inconsistency in his life by creating a safe haven, yet he is torn between his willpower to keep everything the same and hisinevitability of not being in control.

  3. Visual I want the setting to evoke a sense of abandonment. This will be done by having a backyard or garden that looks unkempt and forgotten about, in the hope that it will also convey Sam’s family not committing to relationships. The lighting will be grey and gloomy with an overcast weather feel. The backyard/garden also needs to be one which Sam can play around in that will show his sense of adventure and imagination.   5. Sound • This film requires an instrumental that is moving, sad, sentimental and nostalgic.   6. Reflection I want my film to convey the notions of brokenness and nostalgia. However I need help with a cinematographer who can help me visualiseand make decisions on what it will look like on screen. I have rough ideas of what shades and colour palate this film will have, however I need more input in this area of how it is going to look like visually (including lighting) to fit the themes and underlying message. I also have a few ideas of different shots for different moments and scenes to convey Sam’s personality and how the cardboard house will look like. However I am lacking in which shots will look best for conveying different types of emotions and moments in the film.

  7. Fascination, why you should care, significance Ask yourself this: Where do you put your hope in when things don’t go your way? What do you hold onto when everything around you seems to fall apart? This film will aim to highlight aspects of the human condition such as wanting to be noticed, loved and accepted, especially by family. This film highlights the struggle of building our own lives the way we want to and the frustration of not finding full satisfaction and when things don’t go our way. This is important because I want my audience to empathise with this and question their direction and purpose in life.
