Components of a Vector • Any vector can be expressed as the sum of its rectangular components (that are perpendicular to one another) • Ex. Homer pushes with a force of 400N downwards on a lawnmower. Show the horizontal and vertical components.
Example: Determine the horizontal and vertical components of each force: • Magnitude 430N, theta = 40 degrees clockwise from the horizontal
Example: Determine the horizontal and vertical components of each force: • 700km/h at 20 degrees to the vertical
Example: A sign is supported as shown in the diagram. The tension in the slanted rod supporting the sign is 140N at angle of 27degrees to the horizontal. What are the horizontal and vertical components of the tension?
Example: A 60kg crate is lying on a ramp that has an incline of 25 degrees with respect to the ground. There is a force of friction of 40N down the ramp. • Find the rectangular components of the force of gravity down the ramp and perpendicular to the ramp.
Example: A 60kg crate is lying on a ramp that has an incline of 25 degrees with respect to the ground. There is a force of friction of 40N down the ramp. • Determine the force with which the ramp is pushing up on the crate. • Determine the net force on the crate.
