  1. DESIGNING THE SYLLABUS OF ENGLISH FOR TOURISM SUBJECT (HOTEL FACILITIES) BY : AweyMulyana DwiAgustiningrum Lisa Sudarsono Suryadi UNTIRTA, 8TH SEPTEMBER 2018

  2. HOTEL • The word “hotel” comes from the French “hostel,” which comes from the Latin “hospes.” In ancient Rome, hospes was a stranger who lounged at the house of another. Today, hospes has taken on an entirely different meaning • A “hotel” has been described as “a building held out to the public as a place where all transient persons who come will be received and entertained as guests for compensation and it opens its facilities to the public as a whole rather than limited accessibility to a well-defined private group.” A “motel” is a hotel for automobile tourists

HOTEL • One type of accommodation that uses part or all of the part for lodging services, food and beverage providers and other services for the general public that is managed commercially (Parpostel Ministerial Decree no Km 94 / HK103 / MPPT 1987). • Buildings that are managed commercially by providing lodging facilities for the general public with the following facilities: • Lodging services • Food and beverage services • luggage services • Washing clothes. • Use of furniture facilities and decorations in it. • (Endar Sri, 1996: 8) • Facilities for public housing for tourists by providing room service, food and beverage providers and accommodation with payment terms (Lawson, 1976: 27).

HOTEL & OTHER BUSSINES • The hotel industry is classified as a capital-intensive and labor-intensive industry which means that in its management requires a large business capital with many workers. • Influenced by circumstances and changes that occur in the economic, political, social, cultural and security sectors where the hotel is located. • Produce and market their products together with the place where the service is produced. • Operates 24 hours a day, without any holidays in service to hotel customers and the general public. • Treating customers like kings also treat customers as partners in business because hotel services depend on the number of customers who use the hotel facilities.

  5. KINDS OF HOTEL • City Hotel • Hotels located in urban areas, usually reserved for people who intend to stay temporarily (in the short term). City Hotels are also referred to as transit hotels because they are usually occupied by business people who utilize the business facilities and services provided by the hotel. • Residential Hotel • Hotels located in the side area of ​​big cities that are far from the city crowd, but easily reach places of business activities. This hotel is located in quiet areas, mainly because it is intended for people who want to stay for a long time. By itself this hotel is equipped with complete living facilities for all family members.

  6. CONT… • Resort Hotel • Hotels located in mountainous areas (mountain hotels) or by the beach (beach hotels), on the edge of the lake or on the banks of rivers. Hotels like this are mainly for families who want to rest on holidays or for those who want to relax. • Motel (Motor Hotel) • Hotels located on the outskirts or along highways that connect one city to another, or on the outskirts of highways close to the gates or big city limits. This hotel is intended as a temporary resting place for those who travel using public transportation or their own car. Therefore this hotel provides garage facilities for cars.

CONT… FACILITY • A facility is something such as an additional service provided by an organization or an extrafeature on a machine which is useful but not essential. • Facilities are buildings, pieces of equipment, or services that are provided for a particular purpose. • Facility condition, completeness, interior and external designs and clean facilities have to be paid attention related to direct access for customers. • Facility is all physical materials provided to customers in order to easily access doing activities during staying in hotel.

  8. CONT… • Facility is a toll provided by hotel, as the main factor in determining people staying or not. (FandiTjiptono, ManajemenJasa, Andi Offset, Yogyakarta:1997) • Facilities in hotel can be bed room, restaurant, gym, swimming pool, live music etc.

SYLLABUS DESIGN • Course objectives • By the end of the course, the students should be able to ; • understand basic concept of hotel services and the importance of correct pronunciation of words and expressions, • understand detail parts of the hotel and expressions used • practice and use proper expressions to the visitors and others, • give solution to the visitors’ complaints • Teaching Method • Throughout the course, the lecturer / teacher will apply some teaching methods such as Collaborative - Based Learning, Competitive-Based Learning, Problem-based Learning, Project-based learning, Case-based learning, and Task-based learning. During the course, the students should actively communicate in English regardless of the grammatical errors. • The instructors serve as scaffolders who only give exposure and provide language model to the students. Ninety percent of the class meeting will be given to the students to interact to each other through different tasks

  10. CONT… • Absenteeism • Students are expected to attend all the scheduled meetings on time. Absenteeism policy follows the regulations made by the academic office. In general, the students are allowed to skip classes no more than 3 times within 14 meetings. There will be no excuse signature on the attendance list. During the class, the students are not allowed to get out of the room more than 2 times. • Format of group Paper • Title Cover, Table of content, Opening, Discussion, Conclusion and References (you may also use on – line resources but don’t do copy paste)

CONT… • Format of Presentation • Greeting, sequences of presentation, presentationand question & answer session. • Standard Competence • Comprehending vocabularies, phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions used in the hotel and using them in sentences appropriately. • Scoring and Evaluation • Scoring system of the course is divided into three main categories : conceptual skill, practical skill, and ethical skill scores.
