  1. BECOMING A MAN OF PRAYER Based on “Becoming A Man of Prayer: A Seven-Week Strategy Based on the Instructions of Jesus” – By Bob Beltz MBC First Light Summer Session

  2. Lead Us Not Into Temptation, But Deliver Us From Evil Mike Cauldwell – July 10, 2019

  3. A Working Model & Seven-Week Strategy

  4. Purpose • Provide a prayer time tool for asking for spiritual protection.

  5. Spiritual Warfare • It’s a battlefield out there. • Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” • We are part of a war of epic and eternal proportions that affects ever area of our lives.

  6. Spiritual Warfare • However, for many men, the question is “What if you were in a war and didn’t even know it?” • Jesus helps us with the daily battle by including this portion of the Lord’s Prayer – “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:13

  7. The Enemy • In Matthew 6:13 Jesus identified the two greatest enemies we face in spiritual warfare: • First Enemy Temptation • Romans 7:18 “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.”

  8. Temptation • C.S. Lewis referred to this part of our being as “bent.” • Paul refers to it in Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

  9. Temptation • Before Christ came into our lives we lived under the dominant influence of the flesh. • Sinning came naturally. • However, Christ and the Holy Spirit changed all that. • Romans 5:22-23 “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

  10. Temptation • Every day we have the potential to allow one of these two realities to dominate our lives. • James 1:13-14 “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.”

  11. Overcoming Temptation • When Christ was tempted his consistent response was “It is written.” • Memorize the truth of Scripture (Psalm 119:11). • Exercise spiritual willpower to resist the temptation (1 Peter 5:9). • Turn from temptation and flee (2 Timothy 2:22, Genesis 39:12). • Avoidance – Psalm 23:3 “He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.”

  12. Overcoming Temptation • We pray that God will guide our lives in such a way that we experience a minimum of temptation • Ephesians 6:13-17 “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,”

  13. Enemy – Part 2 • “Deliver us from evil.” • We have a real and personal enemy. • Satan hates you and has a diabolical plan for your life. • Jesus invites us to pray for spiritual protection to keep Satan from ever being able to gain access to our lives.

  14. Spiritual Protection • We need a “spiritual umbrella” of protection. • We pray this spiritual umbrella into place. • “Deliver us” – rhuomai – “deliver from,” “preserve from,” or “protect from.” • God becomes a refuge or fortress – Psalm 27:1-6, Psalm 46:1, and Psalm 91:1-2.

  15. Spiritual Protection • Psalm 91:4 “He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” • One of the most vivid examples of protection can be found in one of the oldest books of the Bible. • Job 1:9-10 “Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.””

  16. Spiritual Protection • God, many times, placed or removed a spiritual hedge around Israel. • Isaiah 5:5 “And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.” • In prayer, we can erect a spiritual hedge around our lives and our families.

  17. The Host of Heaven • One of the YHWH names of God is “Lord of the Host.” • The actions of angels occur throughout the Bible. • Acts 12:7-8 “And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. 8 And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”” • Pray that God would send forth and activate the ministry of those angels He has appointed to minister to us and our family.

  18. Assignment • Develop a section of your prayer notebook entitle “Developing Spiritual Protection.” • Make a capital A section on temptation. List those areas where you are especially susceptible to temptation and failure. • Make a list of the qualities Paul identifies as part of your spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10-20). • Under capital B, work on developing a section on building a spiritual fortress. Make note of the presence and power of God as the source of deliverance from the schemes of the evil one. • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray for 30 minutes, 5 days this week. • Pray using all of the 6 components of your notebook you have developed thus far.

  19. Assignment (cont.) 4. Read Ephesians 6 daily.
