  2. Be sure to go on D2L or on my website (http://math.kennesaw.edu/~ckoppelm) and download and print a copy of the syllabus. We have been asked to keep copying to a minimum and have been told not to print syllabi. Please sign at the bottom of the last page of the syllabus and bring it to class on Thursday. I will collect your signed syllabus and return it a week from today.

  3. Textbook: Functions and Change, Fourth Edition by Crauder, Evans, and Noell or soft cover hard cover From the preface of the textbook: This text uses real-world problems and models almost exclusively, including an incredible diversity of interesting applications…. Calculator: TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84, or TI-84 Plusgraphing calculator. This calculator will be used throughout the course. From the preface of the textbook: This text is designed to be used with a graphing calculator, and the calculator is an essential part of the presentation as well as the exercises. Throughout the Text we employ TI83 screens…. An accompanying Technology Guide provides TI83, TI83+, and TI84 keystrokes….

  4. The cost at the KSU bookstore for the soft cover textbook with the access code for the on-line homework is $184.05. The cost of a used textbook is $60.00 and the cost of the access code is $69.05.

  5. Grading Policies: There will be graded homework assignments, group activities, three tests, a final group project, and a comprehensive final exam. They will count as follows: Three tests counting 100 points each 300 points Graded homework assignments, group activities 70 points (approximate) Exit tickets 40 points (approximate) Final group project 60 points Comprehensive final exam 150 points Total 620 points (approximate) No make-up exams or make-up exit tickets will be given. You may substitute 90% of the final exam grade (scaled appropriately) for the lowest test grade or a missed test.If you miss a test due to illness or an emergency on the day of the test , contact me immediately (email is preferable). It may be possible for you to take the test before the next class meeting.

It will be distributed toward the end of class and must be completed and submitted before leaving. Attendance will be taken by referring to exit tickets submitted. At the end of the semester, the two lowest ET grades will be dropped.

  16. About the On-Line Homework Problems will be assigned both from the textbook and online from www.webassign.net. The problems in the WebAssign homework assignments will correspond to those assigned from the textbook. You should not try the WebAssign problems until you have done the problems assigned in the textbook AND after we have had a chance to answer questions about them in class. The WebAssign assignments must be completed by midnight on the day before the test covering the material. Your solutions to the problems assigned from the textbook should be written and may be collected.

  21. When in class, please refrain from using laptops except perhaps to view the PowerPoint presentations more closely.

  22. At your favorite restaurant, the food is excellent and the service terrific. Whenever you pay the bill you leave a 20% tip for the servers in addition to the 7% sales tax. Write a formula that can be used to calculate the total cost, T, at your favorite restaurant, based on the menu price, P, of the food (including drinks) you ordered. T = P + .20P +.07P orT = 1.27P

  23. T = 1.27P This formula is an example of a function. Because the Total cost depends on the Price of the food ordered, we say Total cost is a function of the Price of the food ordered or T is a function of P.

  24. (24.50) T = 1.27P = 31.115 Where T represents the total cost and P represents themenuprice of the food ordered. What would your total cost be if the menu price of the food was $24.50? Answer: The total cost would be $31.12

  25. What is meant by T(18.95)? Because in this situation T is a function of P, we often write T(P) instead of just T,and the formula becomes T(P) = 1.27P This is read “T of P equals 1.27P” Note: T and T(P) represent the same thing in this context. and are interchangeable. T(P) is referred to as functional notation The total cost of a meal (including tax and tip) for an order with a price of $18.95. What is the value of T(18.95)? However, $24.07 would be more correct in this context. 24.0665

  26. Another example

  27. I want to fence in a rectangular garden next to a wall of my house. I have a total of 20 yards of chicken wire to use to construct the fence. I only need to construct three sides of the rectangle, since the wall of my house will serve as the fourth side. Is there a formula (function) for area of the garden in terms of the width of the garden?

  28. The function that represents area as a function of width is A(W) = where A = area (in square yds) and W = width of the rectangle (in yds) 1. What is the area of the garden when the width is 4.2 yards? 48.72 sq yds

  29. 5. Can you guess at the maximum possible area that the garden can have? The function that represents area as a function of width is A(W) = where A = area (in square yds) and W = width of the rectangle (in yds) 1. What is the area of the garden when the width is 4.2 yards? 48.72 sq yds 2. How can question 1 be rephrased using functional notation? What is A(4.2)? 3. Evaluate the formula at W = 3. 42 4. Evaluate A(3). 42

  30. 1. 2. 3. Express the total cost, T(P,H), as a function of the variables P (price of food) and H (number of hours car is parked). What is meant by T(28,3)? What is the value of T(28,3)? At your favorite restaurant, the food is excellent and the service impeccable. Whenever you pay the bill you leave a 20% tip for the servers in addition to the 7% sales tax. TOWN GARAGE The parking garage also charges $7.50 per hour for parking. $58.06
